We ran a piece in Salon that September subtitled “Everything you know about the Littleton killings is wrong.” It was researching that story that got me into this for the long haul. It was three months later-around late July-that I began digging and discovered the depth of our collective mistake.

I reported most of the big myths at one time or another: the killers targeting jocks and minorities, the role of the Trench Coat Mafia, Christian martyr Cassie Bernall professing her belief in God before she was shot … None of that happened. I covered Columbine for Salon, beginning the day it happened, and I fell into the groupthink. I hope this book contributes to setting the story right.” Who were you writing for at the time of the attack, and what did you get wrong?
